Environmental Insights Explorer

Mission: To make it easier for cities to access, and act on, data and information related to climate change....

Background: To date, more than nine thousand cities have made commitments to comply with the , a framework for reducing and eventually eliminating the world's reliance on fossil fuels. However, fewer than 20 percent have submitted a greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory to relevant authorities. In partnership with the , Google created the Environmental Insights Explorer tool to make it easier for cities around the world to estimate their GHG inventory, take steps to reduce GHG emissions, and measure their progress. With the tool, datasets that once required onsite measurements and many months to compile can now be assessed virtually, thereby reducing the investment of time and money that often prevents cities from taking decisive climate change-related action.

Outstanding Web Features: Still in beta, EIE emerged from a decade's worth of climate-related projects at Google, including , a tool that measures rooftop solar energy potential, and , a platform for geospatial analysis. The tool makes city-level data freely available in three categories: building emissions, transportation emissions, and rooftop solar potential. After users have selected a city (Buenos Aires, Argentina; Melbourne, Australia; Victoria, Canada; Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; or Mountain View, California, with more to come), they can explore insights that support a GHG inventory, customize results with their own data, and/or set mitigation goals and identify reduction opportunities. In each category, visitors also can drill down to more specific statistics and key assumptions made. Links to other information, including the  behind the site and ways to reduce emissions, are also available, as are links to , information about the , the  from the Rocky Mountain Institute, and  specific to the cities included in the tool.
