Online charitable giving during the last two months of 2013 rose 16 percent over 2012 levels, the reports.
According to , a nonprofit that processes online donations, gifts made between November 1 and December 31 totaled $77.9 million, up from $67.1 million for the same period in 2012. The survey also found that the average gift size increased 10 percent, to $172 from $157 in 2012. Network for Good told the Chronicle that the number of donations it handled increased 6 percent during the two-month period, with the campaign on December 3 providing a boost despite concerns among some nonprofit observers that it would cannibalize end-of-year giving.
Instead, as has been the case in recent years, online donations made during the last few days of 2013 represented about 10 percent of total giving for the year. "Giving Tuesday and all of those giving activities earlier in the giving season didn't seem to impact the total dollars or the number of donations in the last three days of the year," said Caryn Stein, director of content strategy at Network for Good.
