in Reno, Nevada, has announced a $7.5 million gift from the to improve pediatric health care in the region.
The largest gift ever made to Renown Health will establish the William N. Pennington Fund for Advanced Pediatric Care, income from which will be used to recruit specialists in areas such as pediatric infectious disease, pediatric surgery, adolescent medicine, and pediatric pathology. Renown executives hope the fund will make it possible for and the 's Department of Pediatrics to apply for a pediatric residency program and ensure a sufficient supply of pediatricians for the region.
With 9.6 pediatricians per 100,000 people, well below the national average of 15 per 100,000, many sick or injured children in northern Nevada currently must travel to other states for specialized care.
"Keeping kids and families in our community healthy is something Mr. Pennington was very passionate about," the foundation said in a statement. "He believed in helping children and we are so pleased to see his values and spirit reflected in this contribution."
