William & Mary Receives $50 Million Gift

The has announced a $50 million gift from an anonymous donor in support of its $1 billion fundraising campaign.

The largest gift in the school's 113-year history will be used primarily to fund scholarships for talented students at both the and . In addition, the gift will support athletics at the school, a series that brings law and business leaders to campus, and an annual award that recognizes exceptional faculty in the business and law schools.

The most recent major gift to the campaign brings the total raised to more than $511 million, pushing the campaign past its halfway mark and exceeding the amount raised during the university's last campaign, which ended in 2007.

"Our strength as an institution depends greatly on access to resources that enable the university to provide a first-rate liberal arts education and a campus community where scholars can excel in the classroom, on the field, and in any professional environment," said Sue Gerdelman ('76), chair of the campaign and secretary of the W&M Board of Visitors. "[The campaign] will allow William & Mary to continue to lead, to inspire, and to influence positive change in our world."
