Wegman Family Foundation Awards $17 Million to University of Rochester

The has announced gifts totaling $17 million from the .

The foundation awarded a $10 million lead gift to the university's and $7 million toward construction of on the University of Rochester Medical Center campus. In recognition of its gift, the institute's new building will bear the Wegman name.

Last fall, the university announced a plan to commit $100 million to expand its work in data science that includes the creation of the institute and a facility to house it as well as the hiring of up to twenty faculty members with expertise in the field. The new facility will include offices for faculty in medicine, science and engineering, the humanities, education, business, and other disciplines.

The children's hospital, which is scheduled to open in the summer of 2015, will feature fifty-two private patient rooms, a greatly expanded neonatal intensive care unit, and spaces designed specifically to meet the needs of children and their families, including a healing garden, family lounges, and a hospitality suite where family members can refresh and cook their own meals.

"Data science is the defining discipline of the twenty-first century and among the university's top priorities," said UR president Joel Seligman. "Danny [Wegman, the foundation's president and chair] saw the potential of this initiative to build off of our strengths in data science and computational capabilities and our long tradition of entrepreneurship. He also knew a gift to the new Golisano Children's Hospital would be an investment in our region's future. Both of these gifts will further deepen the Wegman legacy in upstate New York."
