UC Davis Receives $1 Million Endowment Gift From Alumna for Study Abroad

The has announced a $1 million gift to its from alumna ('58) and board member Ann E. Pitzer.

The gift will establish the Ann E. Pitzer Study Abroad Endowment, income from which will fund scholarships for between twenty and forty students a year who otherwise might not be able to participate in a study-abroad program. In addition to the endowment, $10,000 of the gift will be allocated to an immediate-use fund so that scholarships can be awarded starting with the 2013-14 academic year. The scholarships will be applicable to the more than two hundred program options in fifty countries offered by the UC Davis Education Abroad Center.

The gift also will generate matching funds of $25,000 from the UC Davis Foundation Matching Fund for Student Support, a fundraising initiative launched last December to match gifts up to $25,000 to create or support endowed student scholarships, fellowships, and awards. As part of her gift, Pitzer established a challenge to encourage additional gifts to the endowment that has raised $200,000 in matching funds.

"Financial resources are the No. 1 barrier to students taking advantage of UC Davis' study abroad program," said UC Davis chancellor Linda P.B. Katehi. "The Ann E. Pitzer Study Abroad Endowment will help provide students with the financial resources to expand their academic experience on a global scale."
