Teagle Foundation Awards $1.2 Million for Liberal Arts Initiatives

The New York City-based has announced grants totaling nearly $1.3 million in support of liberal arts programs nationwide.

The grants were awarded through two recently launched initiatives — , which seeks to boost access to and success in the liberal arts for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, and , which is focused on increasing undergraduates' knowledge of American democracy and encouraging civil discourse.

The awards include $450,000 over three years to , , , , , and in support of a student-centered approach to a more cohesive and coordinated curriculum redesign within the California State University System; $115,000 over three years to in Kenosha, Wisconsin, to provide intensive college-level humanities classes to low-income high school students; $275,000 over there years to , , , and to embed classic works of literature and philosophy in English composition and other required courses; and $115,000 over three years to to expand the , a national network of institutions that employ a series of courses that combine traditional reading assignments with direct experience in the state legislative process in order to provide students with a general understanding of how government works at the state level.
