Pritzkers Award $20 Million to UCLA for Environmental Initiative, Foster Youth

The has announced gifts totaling $20 million from the for environmental and sustainability research, arts programs, and to establish an endowment for students who are or were in foster care.

The foundation awarded $15 million to the to establish up to five faculty chairs, including $5 million to endow a Pritzker Distinguished Chair in Environment and Sustainability; $2 million to endow four chairs in sustainability; $5 million in support of the , which will seek solutions that maximize energy and water efficiency, protect urban biodiversity, and enhance quality of life; and $3 million to endow a $100,000 Pritzker Sustainability Prize and to launch an annual symposium.

The $20 million total includes a of $2 million to UCLA's for expanded arts programming targeting children and families.

The remaining $3 million will be used to create an endowment that supports tutoring, mental health services, summer housing, and unforeseen school expenses for UCLA students who are or were in foster care. The foundation already provides basic supplies to incoming foster youth at UCLA each year, including sheets, a blanket, a laundry kit, toiletries, school supplies, a USB drive, and other college essentials.

"The Pritzkers are taking aim at significant societal problems, and UCLA and Los Angeles will benefit enormously from their leadership.
