People in the News (1/11/15): Appointments and Promotions

The has announced the departure of ERIC BRAVERMAN as CEO, and the appointment of MAURA PALLY as acting CEO.  Braverman, a friend and former colleague of Chelsea Clinton when they worked at McKinsey & Company, joined the foundation in 2013. Pally, who will assume the role of senior vice president of the foundation’s Women and Youth Programs once a permanent CEO is hired, is a veteran aide to Hillary Rodham Clinton and recently directed the former first lady and secretary of state’s initiatives at the foundation.

The has announced the appointment of DON CHEN as director of its Metropolitan Opportunity program area. Chen, previously the program’s acting director, joined the foundation in 2008 as a program officer. His involvement in urban development, equity, and environmental issues includes critical roles as the founder of three organizations — Smart Growth America, Transportation for America, and the National Vacant Properties Campaign — as well as service on the boards of the Funders’ Network for Smart Growth and Livable Communities, West Harlem Environmental Action, the Environmental Leadership Program, and Grist magazine.

The has announced the appointment of KYLE KUTUCHIEF as interim Akron program manager, effective immediately. Kutuchief, who has worked with the foundation since September 2014 as a consultant on talent strategy and community engagement, earlier served as president of , a young professionals development organization, and was director of development for the Austen BioInnovation Institute in Akron.  He replaces JOSH McMANUS, who is leaving to join Rock Ventures LLC in Detroit, where he previously founded D:hive, a talent retention initiative, and helped shape strategy for the city's New Economy Initiative.

The has announced the appointment of VIDYA KRISHNAMURTHY as director of communications. Krishnamurthy joins the foundation from the Pew Research Center, where she  worked for the past ten years as director of communications, responsible for communications strategy and management, media relations, and brand strategy, as well as internal communications. Earlier, her experience included public relations and nonprofit advocacy.

The has announced the appointment of HELEN CHIN as director of its Sustainable Environments program. Chin, a program officer at Surdna since 2008,  has contributed significantly to the foundation’s overall strategic planning and collaboration initiatives. Earlier, she worked in managerial and program roles at West Harlem Environmental Action, the International Fund for Animal Welfare, the Wildlife Trust of India, the New England Aquarium, and the Natural Resources Defense Council. Chin currently serves on the boards of the Environmental Grantmakers Association, the Eno Center for Transportation, and Jobs to Move America.

The has announced the appointment of THOMAS COLLINS as executive director and president. Collins, an educator, art historian, administrator, and author, has spent the past five years serving as director of the Pérez Art Museum Miami. Earlier, he served as director of the Neuberger Museum of Art in Purchase, New York; director of the Contemporary Museum in Baltimore; chief curator at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati; associate curator at the Henry Art Gallery in Seattle; and Newhall Curatorial Fellow at the Museum of Modern Art in New York.

The has announced the appointment of EDWARD L. HUNTER as CEO, effective February 9. Hunter, currently director of the Washington office of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is a principal CDC spokesperson to Congress, the Obama administration, and public health organizations. Earlier, he was associate director of CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics.

The has announced that its president, GARY D. NELSON, has been selected for the National Rural Health Association's 2015 program. Nelson, who joined the foundation in 2002, previously served as program director of the California Wellness Foundation’s Health Improvement and Healthy Aging initiatives and population health programs. Earlier,  he worked in evaluation roles at the CDC and held academic appointments in public health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham and  the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He began his public health career with the Utah State Department of Public Health.

The has announced the election of JOHN F.A.V. CECIL to its board. Cecil, president of community development firm Biltmore Farms, earlier worked at international dairy company Foremost McKesson, managing operations in Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. He currently serves as chair of the Institute of Emerging Issues at North Carolina State University and sits on the boards of Mission Health System and Mission Hospitals, the Research Triangle Foundation, the North Carolina Arboretum, and the SCANA Corporation.

The has announced the election of MICHAEL J. KLAG to its board. Klag, dean of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, is an internist and epidemiologist, an advocate for women’s and children’s health, and author of more than two hundred publications. Earlier, he served as editor-in-chief of the Johns Hopkins Family Health Book and  chaired  the NIH Advisory Board on Clinical Research and the Association of Schools of Public Health.

has announced the appointments of KYUNGSUN CHUN, LUTHER M. RAGIN, JR., and VALERIE ROCKEFELLER WAYNE to its board. Chung is founding CEO of Root Impact. Ragin is former president and CEO of the Global Impact Investing Network. And Wayne is a teacher and leader in the field of secondary education. “Kyungsun, Luther, and Valerie are authorities in global philanthropy and impact investing, and we are honored with the opportunity to leverage their unique expertise,” said RPA president and CEO Melissa Berman.

The has announced the election of COLLEEN QUINT to its board. Quint, president and CEO of the Alfond Scholarship Foundation in Portland, Maine, has worked in education for more than twenty years, beginning her career as an education law consultant working for foundations specializing in scholarship programs and investment, education access, and economic development. Most recently, she was founding executive director of the Senator George J. Mitchell Scholarship Research Institute.

has announced the hiring of JULIE FRY as president and CEO, effective February 2. Fry has thirty years’ experience in business, philanthropy, and the arts, most recently as a program officer for the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation’s performing arts program. Earlier, she served as associate vice president of fund services at the San Diego Foundation and was the first director of the foundation’s  arts and culture program. Fry  previously served on a number of nonprofit boards in the United States and the United Kingdom and is pursuing an MA in historic preservation from Goucher College.

has announced the appointment of COLLEEN SHEEHEY-CHURCH as national president.  Sheehey-Church joined MADD in 2005, a year after her 18-year-old son drowned in a car accident, and is the first victim of drugged driving to serve as the organization’s leader. Prior to joining MADD, Sheehey-Church worked as a senior sales and training consultant at several companies, including GP Strategies, Allen Communications, FranklinCovey, and AT&T.

The has announced the planned retirement of its director, GRAHAM W. J. BEAL, on June 30. Beal, who has led the organization for sixteen years,  presided over many significant turning points in the museum’s existence, including its participation in the recent “grand bargain” initiative. Prior to joining DIA, Beal served as director of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art; as director of the Joslyn Art Museum in Omaha, Nebraska; and as chief curator at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.

In other news, the has announced the planned departure of president and CEO MICHAEL BRENNAN at the end of 2015. Brennan, who has led the organization for eleven years, began his United Way career in his native Detroit as a fundraiser in 1985 and later served in fundraising and management roles at the Greater Kalamazoo United Way, United Way of Oakland County, the Detroit United Way, and  United Way of America (now United Way Worldwide). “I’ve spent thirty years on the United Way mission, and I’ll always be a lifelong champion of [it],” he said. “But I have interest in pursuing this focus of driving innovation in the social sector.” Last year, Brennan was one of four professionals from across the U.S. chosen to attend a ten-week program at Stanford University’s Institute of Design, which teaches “design thinking” as an approach to problem-solving.
