Patagonia to Donate $10 Million in 'Black Friday' Sales

Outdoor clothing and gear company has announced that it will donate $10 million — representing the value of the merchandise it sold on Black Friday — to environmental organizations.

When the company announced earlier this month that it would donate 100 percent of its global retail and online Black Friday sales to grassroots nonprofit groups working to protect the air, water, and soil for future generations, it was hoping to generate $2 million for the environment. But Patagonia customers, seeing the company's pledge as a "fundraiser for the earth," responded enthusiastically. The company, which is based in Ventura, California, is a member of , an alliance of businesses that contribute 1 percent of total annual sales to environmental groups, as well as a signatory to an calling on elected officials to reaffirm the U.S. commitment to the Paris climate agreement.
