The has announced a ten-year, $35 million grant from to renew their decade-long conservation partnership.
Since its creation in 2005, the public-private program, which supports the purchase and preservation of one acre of wildlife habitat in the United States for every acre of land developed by the giant retailer, has protected more than a million acres through conservation easements and land acquisitions in thirty-three states, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
As part of its latest commitment, NFWF announced grants totaling $3 million in support of projects that are expected to leverage an additional $11 million in investment. The new grants will fund efforts to secure land for the reintroduction of elk in West Virginia and conserve important wildlife habitats on ranch lands in Montana and Colorado, as well as tracts of forest in Georgia, Arkansas, and Massachusetts. In total, the projects will conserve wildlife habitat more than 118,000 acres.
"Acres for America has achieved tremendous success by bringing together business leaders, landowners, public agencies, and conservationists to protect our nation's natural resources at a grand scale," said NFWF executive director and CEO Jeff Trandahl. "The beauty of Acres for America is that everybody wins. Critical habitats that were once threatened are now protected, forever. The public gains access to some of America’s most pristine natural areas. And ranchers, farmers, and foresters can continue to work their lands."
