NewSchools Venture Fund Awards $3 Million for New Schools

The has announced grants totaling more than $3 million to support the opening of four new schools this fall as well as planning for ten more schools that could open next fall.

Grants ranging from $150,000 to $500,000 were awarded through the fund's initiative to teams of educators working to create a new type of public school. In addition to funding, the initiative will provide teams with a supportive cohort experience designed to help make their visions for their schools a reality.

Planning-phase grants were awarded to teams based at in Pasadena, California; in Sacramento; the in San Rafael, California; the and in New Orleans; in Denver; the in East Palo Alto, California; in Chicago; in Austin, Texas; and the in Providence, Rhode Island. Teams receiving grants to launch new schools, all of which participated in an earlier planning phase, include; in Dallas; ; and in Nampa, Idaho. 

"We're enthusiastic about this NewSchools Invent cohort," said Scott Benson, a managing partner with NewSchools Venture Fund. "It includes a diverse group of innovative leaders in cities across the country who are ready to take on the challenge of creating new types of schools. We need more innovative schools designed to better serve each student with personalized learning environments."
