has announced a $5 million gift from Joe and Susan Plumeri in support of a new center for social justice and economic opportunity.
Awarded through the , the gift will establish the Joe Plumeri Center for Social Justice and Economic Opportunity (the Plumeri Center), where NYSL's law firm will provide a diverse client base with free legal services. The center, which will be home to NYLS's more than twenty legal clinics, also will provide space for extensive simulation training in both its first-year legal practice program and upper-level courses and will include a moot court room with an accompanying jury deliberation room.
Joe Plumeri, vice chair and senior advisor to the chairman and CEO of , previously was chair and CEO of , a global insurance broker; CEO of ; chair and CEO of ; vice chair of the ; and president and a managing partner at Shearson Lehman Brothers.
"Joe is someone who firmly believes that you learn best by doing," said NYLS dean and president Anthony W. Crowell. "[H]is donation will ensure that they have cutting-edge experiential learning and are ready for today's legal job market. For law students, the experience of being lawyers—whether counseling a client on business development issues or making a presentation to a public interest law organization—can be a powerful way to learn."
