Nellie Mae Education Foundation Awards $5 Million to Portland Public Schools

in Maine has announced a $5 million grant from the in support of professional development activities for high school teachers.

The funds will be used to help teachers attend conferences dedicated to the and Johns Hopkins University's learning models, which will be implemented at two schools in the district during the 2013-14 school year as part of Pathways to Success, a system-wide initiative to improve options for students.

The grant also will fund a summer institute dedicated to the model — which involves students in rigorous, multidisciplinary projects that address real-world issues — to help teachers at Casco Bay High develop and refine learning expeditions for the coming school year.

Finally, the three high schools in the district will use the grant to create internships tailored to students' needs as well as to hire an volunteer to oversee extended-day programming for English-language learners.
