The has announced grants totaling $34.2 million to stimulate experimental research in the physics of quantum materials.
Through the foundation's five-year, $90 million — one of the largest privately funded initiatives in the quantum physics field — nineteen at eleven U.S. universities were awarded five-year grants to pursue ambitious, high-risk research and new experimental techniques that could transform the scientific community's understanding of quantum materials, leading to revolutionary applications in electronics, computing, energy technology, and medical devices. According to the foundation, quantum materials are substances in which the collective behavior of electrons leads to a range of emergent properties, including high-temperature superconductivity and exotic forms of magnetism.
The foundation's EPiQS initiative provides support for scientists in three areas: experiment, materials synthesis, and theory. Grant recipients in the areas of and were announced in August and March.
