The in Troy, Michigan, has announced the recipients of the 2014 .
Seventeen Detroit artists and one artist collective working in the disciplines of dance/music, film/theater, literary arts, or the visual arts will each receive an unrestricted prize of $25,000 in recognition of their creative vision and commitment to excellence. In addition, fellows will receive professional practice opportunities executed by , including an intensive professional development retreat presented by New York-based artist service organization . Administered by the program at the , the annual fellowship program is designed to advance the artistic careers of artists living and working in Detroit, as well as to raise the profile of the area's artistic community.
"Artists challenge us," said Kresge Foundation president Rip Rapson. "They move us to reflect on all dimensions of community life. They inspire us. As we look to a future beyond the city's bankruptcy, artists provide an indispensable well-spring of insight and creativity from which our community can draw inspiration and hope.
