Houston Endowment Awards $6 Million to Houston Independent School District

The has announced a $6 million grant from the for a three-year program designed to boost college and career preparation in underperforming schools.

Based on strategies that have proven effective in charter schools, the program will be introduced in five middle schools and four high schools during the 2010-2011 school year, with an expansion into an additional eleven elementary schools planned for 2011-12. In addition to ensuring that each school has effective teachers and an effective principal, the program aims to create a culture of high expectations, increase instructional time for students, provide in-school tutoring, and utilize data to drive instruction.
