Harvard Receives $12 Million to Endow Public Policy Institute

Harvard University has announced a gift of more than $12 million from the and the Rappaport family to permanently endow the at the .

Income from the endowment will support the institute's core operations, which include public sector fellowship programs for graduate students, research grants for scholars to study pressing local issues, and scholarships and training programs for local officials. The institute and university also plan to use income from the endowment to develop and disseminate policy-relevant research about the region and leverage additional spending.

According to the foundation's chair, Phyllis Rappaport, the institute will be dedicated to building a community in which innovation, information sharing, and alliances flourish. "In developing its programs, [the institute] has included innovative ways to link greater Boston's universities and the city, and to create opportunities for critical dialog on tough issues," said Rappaport.
