in Allendale, Michigan, has announced a $1.1 million grant from the to support construction of a new field research building, reports.
Scheduled to be completed in 2013, the 14,800-square-foot building at GVSU's will replace an existing field station and include office space, lab rooms, and a boat ramp. The grant brings to $2.2 million the total amount raised toward the $3.4 million project.
According to , the grant was made through a fund at the foundation created with a $4 million gift from an unnamed donor who wants to spend it down quickly on efforts to restore and improve Muskegon Lake. The donor, who is said to be passionate about education and water, joins other local leaders who are pushing the region's "blue economy."
To meet its campaign goal, the university plans to launch a fundraising drive next month. "We're really going to come together and make sure people know the impact on the area," said GVSU vice president for development Karen Loth. "It's an exciting and meaningful project."
