Gordon, Betty Moore Give $50 Million to Advance Pediatric Heart Care

The in Palo Alto has announced a $50 million gift from to advance research and care for children with heart disease.

The gift from the signatories will provide funding for clinical and research facilities, create an endowment in support of the hospital's Children's Heart Center's strategic priorities, and endow a number of faculty positions. The gift also will enable the center, which will be renamed the Betty Moore Children's Heart Center, to expand its clinical facilities, including a newly designed outpatient center, and train future leaders in the fields of pediatric cardiovascular medicine and surgery.

The Moores were inspired to make the gift after one of their grandchildren had life-saving surgery at the center, which boasts a 98 percent overall survival rate despite treating many patients with complex cardiac conditions. Moving forward, the heart center's team will work to build a robust program in basic, clinical, and translational research aimed at improving the treatment and prevention of congenital and acquired heart conditions, including adult congenital heart disease.

"Children who have received complex surgical intervention to repair a cardiac abnormality require careful monitoring and specialized care throughout their lifespan," said pediatric heart surgeon Frank Hanley, who serves as executive director of the center. "Many of them face repeat hospitalizations and need subsequent interventions. We imagine a day when a child born with a poorly working aortic valve, rather than undergoing multiple open-heart operations throughout his lifetime, instead receives a replacement valve engineered from his own stem cells. Dr. and Mrs. Moore's gift comes at a critical juncture — enabling us to advance beyond surgical repair to the discovery of transformational treatments and interventions and ultimately to true cures."
