Google has announced a program that, in partnership with other organizations, will support artificial intelligence research and engineering focused on developing solutions to a range of global challenges.
The program, , will apply core Google research and engineering efforts to AI projects with the potential to create positive social impact and support the development of AI tools and resources through initiatives such as the . With $25 million in funding from , the challenge will invite nonprofits, academics, and social enterprises from around the world to submit proposals on how they would use AI to address some of the world's biggest social, humanitarian, and environmental problems. In addition to funding, organizations selected through the challenge will receive coaching from Google's AI experts and will be invited to join a specialized Launchpad Accelerator program.
"We want people from as many backgrounds as possible to surface problems that AI can help solve, and to be empowered to create solutions themselves," wrote Jeff Dean, Google senior fellow and senior vice president of Google AI, and Jacquelline Fuller, president of Google.org, in a . "We don't expect applicants to be AI experts."
