The and have each contributed $3 million in support of the construction of , a $140 million streetcar project designed to revitalize downtown Detroit, the reports.
Launched in 2007 by the and several corporations, the public-private project will connect downtown Detroit and the New Center district and is scheduled to be completed in 2016. Recently, M-1 Rail officials revealed a new of the streetcar's 3.3 mile route that showed Ford sponsoring the stop at Amsterdam, near Grand Boulevard, and the streetcar line itself being "powered by DTE Energy."
To date, pledges in support of the project include $49.6 million from Kresge; $37.2 million from the , including a $12.2 million grant announced this week; $10 million each from and the State of Michigan; $9 million from Detroit's ; $7 million from ; $6 million from ; $4 million from the ; and $3 million each from , the , , , , and Wayne County; $1.5 million each from and ; and $1 million from the .
"We may do some things around the stop like e-charging stations for vehicles," said Jim Vella, head of Ford's philanthropic fund and community services, "but we haven't worked that out yet."
