has announced a $20 million commitment in support of efforts to expand affordable housing, economic opportunity, and legal services for low-income people in Silicon Valley.
Awarded through a coalition whose partners include , , , , and the local governments of East Palo Alto and Menlo Park, the funding includes $18.5 million to explore innovative and scalable ways to increase the production and protection of affordable housing in the region. To that end, will receive $250,000 in support of its efforts to build and maintain homes for low-income residents of the valley.
The coalition also will direct $625,000 to job training in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields and designate a local community liaison to help connect community members with open positions at Facebook. In addition, $500,000 will be awarded to an assistance and to provide legal support to tenants threatened with eviction or displacement as a result of unsafe living conditions or landlord abuse.
"We want the region to remain strong and vibrant and continue a long tradition of helping to build technologies that transform the future and improve the lives of people around the world, and also in our extended neighborhood," wrote Elliot Schrage, Facebook's vice president for public policy and communications, in a Facebook news release. "We all need to work together to create new opportunities for housing, transportation, and employment across the region."
