has announced commitments totaling $4.5 million in support of local news publishers through its .
The investments follow the successful piloting earlier this year of the program, an intensive twelve-week program during which fourteen metro newspapers tested various subscriber acquisition strategies, both on- and off-Facebook. The new commitments include $3.5 million to launch the Facebook Membership Accelerator, a three-month bootcamp-style curriculum designed to help nonprofit news organizations and local independent publishers convert and retain paying subscribers by providing access to exclusive membership content and experiences.
Facebook also will make a $1 million donation to , a national matching campaign at the that doubles donations to nonprofit newsrooms by pooling funds from a group of local and national funders that includes the , the , the , and the .
