has announced gifts totaling $23 million to establish a challenge fund for undergraduate financial aid.
The gifts, including $10 million from the , $10 million from alumni Barbara and Fred Sutherland, and $3 million from other donors, will establish the Access and Opportunity Challenge fund, which will match, on a dollar-for-dollar basis, every qualifying gift to the university's financial aid programs. The gifts will be counted toward the university's seven-year, $3.25 billion campaign, which is prioritizing support for need-based financial aid for students at the university's ten schools.
"We're grateful for the extraordinary generosity of Barbara and Fred Sutherland, the Duke Endowment, and the friends who have made the Access and Opportunity Challenge possible," said Duke University president Richard H. Brodhead. "The challenge aims to inspire others to support financial aid at Duke and reflects one of Duke’s fundamental values: access to a Duke education should never be limited by a student's financial circumstances."
