The in New York City has announced a $20 million endowment gift from board member Craig Newmark, founder of craigslist and .
The gift will enable the school to recruit additional faculty, develop innovative programs, and pursue activities aimed at fostering greater trust in journalism. In recognition of the gift, the school will be renamed the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York.
Newmark's previous gifts to CUNY-J School include $10,000 in November 2016 to cover the cost of hosting Electionland, a cooperative venture of news organizations and student journalists focused on identifying possible voting fraud, and $1.5 million in 2017 to help launch the . With the goal of bolstering trust in high-quality journalism by strengthening transparency and media ethics, supporting real-time fact-checking efforts, championing a diverse and inclusive journalism pipeline, and disarming harmful technologies that spread disinformation, Newmark has supported other journalism organizations, including the , the , , the , , the , and the .
"At a time of rapid, digital innovation, eroding public trust in news, and increased governmental oversight, it is imperative that we build a sustainable future for journalism," said Newmark. "The CUNY Graduate School of Journalism is committed to producing skilled, ethically minded, and diverse journalists."
