in Mount Vernon, Iowa, has announced a $20 million gift from alumna Jean Russell ('65), the largest single cash donation in the college's 164-year history, in support of a new science building.
The gift will support a $35 million campaign to build a four-story, 45,600-square-foot science facility and renovate the existing West Science Center and Law Hall to accommodate the college's STEM programs. To be funded entirely by private donations, the college's first new academic building in forty years will include biology and chemistry lab spaces and classrooms, faculty offices, dedicated research space, and study areas. Construction is expected to begin this spring and be completed in early 2019.
"Thanks to Jean and a deeply devoted group of leaders really attached and committed to this school," said Cornell College president Jonathan Brand, "we were able to hit our leadership goal of $11 million dollars for the science center in under two years."
