California

The in Fairfield has announced a gift of $115,000 from the Frank H. and Eva B. Buck Foundation in support of education programs. In addition to enabling the foundation to support teachers and their students, the gift will be used to support local nonprofit organizations offering afterschool and summer-learning programs. The Buck Foundation, which was named after former Rep. Frank H. Buck, who is credited with naming the Social Security System, is closing this year after a quarter-century of grantmaking in support of education.

Illinois

The in Aurora has announced a capital improvement grant of $9,600 to enable Fox Valley Hands of Hope to purchase a new medical equipment washer. The organization operates a "lending closet" where community members in need can borrow medical equipment free of charge, including items such as wheelchairs, walkers, canes, commodes and shower chairs. The grant will enable the agency to effectively clean and sterilize the equipment — an essential service — before it is loaned. 

Massachusetts

The has announced Onotse Omoyeni and Chummeng Soun as the 2016 recipients of the Tom Leggat Fellowship Award. Chummeng will use his award to travel to the Royal University of Fine Arts in Cambodia to study classical Cambodian dance with one of the last surviving masters of the form. And Onotse will use her award to create a podcast series highlighting national figures who have been disenfranchised in the political and social arena as a result of their race and/or ethnicity.

Minnesota

The has awarded second-quarter grants totaling $10,000 to four local organizations, the Winona Daily News reports. Grants of $2,500 each were awarded to Junior Achievement, Winona Area Mountain Bikers, the Winona Arts Center, and Winona Public Schools.

Ohio

A civic-conversation project led by the hopes to convene more than a thousand people for a day of wide-ranging discussions in homes, offices, libraries, places of worship, and community centers across central Ohio, the Columbus Dispatch reports. Scheduled for August 30, the Big Table will include at least a hundred and twenty-five conversations held at various locations in the metro area. Each conversation will have a host, eight to twelve participants, last for an hour, and, according to the foundation, focus on creating civic energy and engagement rather than identifying solutions.

Pennsylvania

The has announced that it has rescheduled its Day of Giving for September 21. Originally scheduled for May 3, the event was suspended due to technical problems with one of its platform providers. The make-up event will use a different outfit, and with the aim of re-energizing the community to show their support, the foundation has committed an additional $100,000 to the $94,000 remaining in its original incentive pool for Allegheny County nonprofits and will restore the $50,000 match pool raised by the Community Foundation of Westmoreland County.

South Carolina

The on Hilton Head Island has announced five grants totaling $180,494. The recipients are Jasper Bluffton Volunteers in Medicine, Boys and Girls Club of Bluffton, the Children’s Center, Girl Scouts of Eastern South Carolina, and the Port Royal Sound Foundation.

Washington

The has announced that it is working with King County Elections to support voter education efforts county-wide and to provide culturally relevant technical assistance in limited-English-speaking communities to ensure that everyone eligible to vote is able to navigate the system. To that end, the foundation will partner with twenty-two community-based organizations to help non-English speakers complete a voter registration form, update their voter information, and find a ballot drop box.
