The and have announced a $4.1 million partnership to build thirty playgrounds by the end of 2015.
The initiative, which will benefit roughly a hundred thousand children across the United States, includes three components: the playgrounds will be designed by children and built by volunteers from local partners and thousands of CarMax associates; the foundation will donate an additional eleven to select partner organizations; and both organizations will collaborate to identify and eradicate "play deserts" through crowd-sourced data from the .
In conjunction with the announcement, more than four hundred volunteers built new playgrounds in Los Angeles and Richmond, Virginia. According to research from the federal only one in five children live within walking distance of a park or playground.
"Play is disappearing across the country, but partnerships like this one with the CarMax Foundation will help give kids the childhood they deserve," said KaBOOM! co-founder and CEO Darell Hammond.
