Burroughs Wellcome Fund Awards $21 Million to Biomedical Researchers

The in North Carolina has announced grants totaling more than $21 million to forty-eight scientists engaged in basic biomedical research.

Twelve grants were awarded in each of four programs. Recipients include Amit Choudhary of the , who was awarded $500,000 over five years in support of his work on snakes, antioxidants, and diabetes; and Sean Robinson Stowell of the , who will receive $700,000 over five years in support of his efforts to elucidate mechanisms of innate immunity against molecular mimicry. In addition, Erika L Pearce at was awarded $500,000 over five years for her research on cellular metabolism in immune responses to infection; while Rosa Anna Uribe of the will receive $60,000 over three years for a functional analysis of enteric neural crest cell migration and development.

"This funding supports individual scientists poised to become leaders in their fields," said BWF president John Burris. "These awards are highly competitive and we look forward to seeing great things happen."
