Charlotte, North Carolina-based department store chain Belk has announced a $15 million initiative in support of neighborhood revitalization efforts in multiple states.
Through the initiative, , which was announced in a on the Belk website, the company will donate at least $15 million over five years to organizations working to strengthen communities in sixteen states — most of them in the South — where its nearly three hundred stores are located. The company is partnering on the effort with and has matched more than $300,000 raised for Habitat from customers during its Home for the Holidays campaign. Additional projects and partners will be announced later this year, while point-of-purchase fundraising efforts will continue at the store level, giving customers a way to support their local communities.
"It's really going to be all about embracing our Southern communities and helping communities and families that may have fallen on hard times through no fault of their own and really giving back to them," Andy Izquierdo, Belk's vice president of communications and community relations, told the . "You'll see it with families who may have found themselves homeless, families that have always wanted to be homeowners, communities that may have been devastated by a natural disaster and need help in rebuilding."
