Annenberg Foundation Launches Philanthropic Technology Initiative

The has announced the launch of an initiative aimed at exploring how the intersection of technology and philanthropy can benefit Los Angeles and its nonprofit community.

In a 2016 survey of Los Angeles nonprofits, the foundation found that 95 percent of the surveyed organizations knew that technology was important to their organization; 60 percent didn't have the staff to support their technology needs; and 54 percent didn’t believe staff were trained well enough to use technology effectively in their day-to-day work. , which builds on the foundation’s history of investment in the region, is a three-pronged initiative designed to convene and partner with local thought leaders, share expertise and capacity-building training, and initiate pilot partnerships with local nonprofits.

The will bring together innovators who have broken new ground at the intersection of philanthropy and industry, while , a six-month pilot program to be launched this month, will provide nonprofits with information on best practices for building capacity for specific technology projects. The inaugural class Alchemy Tech participants includes ten Southern California nonprofits: , the , the , , the , , , the , , and .

The new initiative has launched two other pilot projects in the region — Games for Change Los Angeles, a partnership with that will provide professional development for teachers, game-design skills for middle and high school students, and the opportunity to create games addressing social challenges in the local community; and the , a partnership with the 's LA2050 initiative to support organizations that propose the most innovative use of technology to address social needs in the region.

"By nearly every measure, Los Angeles's new tech ecosystem will continue to have a profound effect on our city," said Wallis Annenberg, chair, president, and CEO of the Annenberg Foundation. "The leaders of these companies today are our philanthropists of tomorrow, and we hope AnnenbergTech can serve as a hub for this next generation to convene and create new models of civic leadership that will lift up and inspire all Angelenos."
