Background

University Settlement Society of New York provides a comprehensive network of services to over 30,000 people of all ages living in the Lower East Side. Its broad network of activities includes adult literacy classes, mental health counseling and intensive case management; group and family day care; support services to the formerly homeless; after-school and summer camp for children and teens; a senior center and a credit union.

 The Door, a partner organization to University Settlement, helps nearly 10,000 young people each year by empowering them to reach their potential by providing comprehensive youth development services in a diverse and caring environment. A major initiative within The Door, Broome Street Academy is a unique charter high school that prepares New York City’s most vulnerable youth for a successful future through rigorous academics paired with supports of The Door.

Job Summary

Assist Accountants in obtaining accounts payable information; enter cash receipts; responsible for reconciliation

Responsibilities

  • Enter Cash Receipts
  • Codify receipts for deposits and prepare deposit slips
  • Responsible for distribution and reconciliation of MetroCards, Petty Cash & Credit Union
  • Prepare journal entries as needed
  • Assist Accountants in obtaining accounts payable information for monthly vouchers as needed
  • Assemble materials and records for program fiscal audits as needed
  • Serve as a back-up for picking up and delivery inter agency mail as needed
  • Serve as a back-up to the Purchasing Agent and to other Accounting Clerks as needed
  • Answer telephone as needed
  • Execute other assignments as requested by supervisor

Qualifications

  • Associates Degree required; Bachelors preferred
  • One to three years in bookkeeping experience preferred
  • Proficient in Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word
  • Good arithmetic skills
  • Good communication and organizational skills
