People, Place and Power: Advancing Racial and Economic Equity

Two years after announcing a new racial equity and economic inclusion agenda, the has undergone an organizational culture shift and implemented an integrated strategy to achieve its goals, two reports from SFF emphasize.  (26 pages, PDF) and an accompanying interactive report, , highlight milestones and lessons learned by the foundation and its staff during the planning process — including an acknowledgment that incrementalism is insufficient. Key lessons cited by staff include the need to 1) listen to community members; 2) look beyond grantmaking and step up as a civic leader; 3) use data to drive the work forward; 4) tap the potential of donors; 5) be proactive about managing organizational change; 6) communicate early and often; 7) invest in state-of-the art IT systems; and 8) recognize that the time for equity is now and that those committed to the work must embrace uncertainty and be responsive to emerging challenges. The interactive report also includes a case study about SFF's efforts to mobilize communities in support of affordable housing.
