Experiments in Arts Engagement: Case Studies

California arts organizations seeking to broaden their audiences to reflect the state's socioeconomic diversity must invest time, build trust, and partner well, a report from the finds. The report, (20 pages, PDF), highlights challenges, solutions, and lessons learned from case studies of eight grantees of the foundation's Exploring Engagement Fund, with practical tips for implementing each strategy. Insights about true engagement with new and diverse populations include the importance of learning about the community and how the organization is perceived by it; working collaboratively with thoughtfully selected partners; focusing marketing and outreach efforts on building relationships with new audiences (rather than selling to them); expanding locations to include non-arts venues; offering participants multiple ways in which to engage with programming; and developing a team that includes the diverse capabilities needed to serve new audiences.
